Nadeshiko09

Contemporary Artist/Illustrator

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1994 in Kagoshima, Japan. Currently based in Kyoto.

Nadeshiko09 acquired techniques such as silkscreen printing, precise color matching, and spray gun application while working at a traditional kimono factory.

These skills form the foundation of his current artistic practice, which incorporates silver leaf, washi paper, silkscreen, and acrylic paint to construct visually refined and symbolically charged compositions.

The name Nadeshiko references the traditional Japanese ideal of femininity, while 09—representing “10 minus 1”—symbolizes a sense of incompleteness: emotional lack, dissatisfaction, and a yearning for validation.

This duality lies at the core of his artistic inquiry into contemporary identity.

A recurring motif in his work is the spiral-shaped eyes of female figures, rendered using manga-inspired visual language to suggest blindness or a lack of perception.

This device reflects the psychological disorientation faced by many young women today—navigating societal expectations without clarity, and often drifting toward predetermined misfortune.

Alongside his independent practice, Nadeshiko09 also works in commercial design, contributing illustrations and merchandise designs for popular anime franchises such as Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, Shinkalion, and Attack on Titan.

His work operates at the intersection of art and commerce, tradition and contemporary expression, individual narrative and cultural symbolism—continually interrogating the unstable contours of modern identity.
